The short film Les Trois Tomates captures the feeling of happiness through “creating, sharing, and enjoying,” combined with the leisurely, slowed-down life of winemaker Günter Hutter.

The recluse has lived for many years on his vineyard, Domaine St. Eugene, in southern France, enjoying a happy and fulfilling life— entirely to his own taste and always in the present moment. This lifestyle also inspired the name of his wines: Les Trois Tomates. During one culinary evening, three tomatoes were used as paperweights for the notes on the wine compositions…

Far removed from the modern world, work becomes a hobby—or better yet, a way of life. Where dedication and love are the driving forces behind creating something to share and enjoy with others. For director Martin Miron, it was particularly important to interpret the life of this expatriate in harmony with nature on film. From the very beginning, the portrait was designed not to be a conventional image film, but to convey what lies behind it. A key element of this is the wisdom: “Not every hour carries weight, not every day is heavy with sun; if you constantly walk through shine and light, you feel no more magic.” This perfectly reflects Günter Hutter’s outlook on life and the world. It’s about staying grounded and not losing touch with reality.

The TWIST Filmproduktion team from Düsseldorf aimed to produce the short film in an analog, vintage-inspired look. They relied on available light and extensive handheld shots to authentically capture Günter Hutter’s contemplative life. To ensure the film didn’t appear outdated, DoP Fabian Bien used unusual perspectives, giving the work a distinctive style. This was further enhanced through the use of anamorphic XELMUS APOLLO lenses from Ukraine, combined with a Canon C500 MKII, filmed in the cinematic 2.35:1 aspect ratio.

Sound played an equally important role. All ambient noises were recorded separately by Mark Luberich to capture the location and its romantic atmosphere as immersively and authentically as possible. The sound design was then harmonized by Justus Großkreutz. Accompanying the film, photographer Lukas Gardemann captured moments of bliss with a Leica M240—images that perfectly convey the sense of freedom and fulfillment in Günter Hutter’s life for posterity.

At the premiere of Les Trois Tomates at a wine festival in summer 2022 in Römerberg, Germany, the audience was captivated, and protagonist Günter Hutter was moved to tears. A beautiful experience for the entire TWIST team—perfectly in line with the spirit of the film: to create, share, and enjoy.
